" ... and oops, I was wrong about that." – that got me 😂

Thanks for the comment! I totally agree with you.

Sometimes I wish we didn't have to come out, 1) because straight/cis people don't have to, 2) because it's kind of an awkward/unnatural process if you think about it – to be expected to announce your sexuality/gender to the world rather than just living in it.

But if what Guadagnino said is right, that we've got a human need to be "seen" by others, then coming out is important, just as you've said. And it's not only important for us to be seen, but for others to see us. That over-quoted quote "you can't be what you can't see" (credit to Marian Wright Edelman, I think) says it all.

Reminds me of when Ellen DeGeneres came out, there was this (now famous) segment on the Oprah Winfrey show where a bunch of critical audience members asked her questions. One woman asked her why she felt the need to come out at all, since she herself wasn't running around telling people "Yep, I'm straight!", referencing Ellen's infamous TIME Magazine cover. To that, Ellen said "You don't have to fight for anyone to embrace you and say 'How wonderful, you have a family and children!' that's just accepted – of course people are going to embrace that." I thought that was a nice way to summarize the point.
